18h annual Martin Luther King Day Chili and Soup supper a success

The Retired Senior Volunteer program organized the 18th annual Martin Luther King Chili and Soup Supper on January 16 brought out 10 churches and organizations from Spearfish who brought chili or soup to the host Countryside Church.

Community members gathered in the Countryside Church's auditorium to honor and remember Martin Luther King, Jr. by donating to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.  Attendees voted for their favorite chili by placing money in the respective organizations donation jar.

RSVP raised $956  and 203 pounds of food.  Everything was donated to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry the following morning, Countryside Church hosted 350 people at the event.  The Hillsview Church of the Nazarene won the Best Chili competition.

The Christian Science Society, Countryside Church, Hillsview Church of the Nazarene, Spearfish Senior Citizens Center, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Seventh Day Advent Church, St. Josephs Catholic Church, United Methodist Church, and BHSU A'viands donated chili, soups, and garnishes.  RSVP volunteers baked cookies and other treats.

The Crow Peak Valley Ranger 4-H group served, cleared tables, and cleaned up.  The sixth-grade Spearfish Middle School Choir, under the direction of Marilee Woodard, performed for the event.
