Community garden initiative benefits pantry patrons

Two Spearfish ladies have launched a project that reflects both their love of gardening and their commitment to helping others.

Jessie Evers and Kelly Mollman (photo at left) spend much time tending to their garden at Hills Horizon Community Gardens in southeast Spearfish. This is their first time to plant a garden, and they are donating all the produce to the Spearfish Community Food Pantry.

"It is a great thing that these young ladies want to raise fresh produce for the clients at the Pantry," said Karen Miller, President of the Pantry Board.  See more photos in our Food Pantry Gallery

"I know it has been a challenge with the high temperatures we have been experiencing, but they have a fine looking garden.  They have done a lot of research on planting different mint plants to enhance the growth of the produce."

Hills Horizon Community Garden plots are available to anyone wishing to raise their own garden.  Josh Krueger, board member for the community gardens, is the one to contact for information.  Master Gardner, Jim Hoxie, does all the mowing and cares for the fruit trees at the site.
